Introduction

This short introduction completely ignores my goals of conciseness and getting to the point as stated in the Preface.

World Domination - the secret goal of every computer geek. Being an intelligent individual, perhaps you plan on achieving your sinister goals of world domination by using tools for building "dominating" (if you know what I mean) products from the market leader of such tools, Microsoft. However, being a geek, you're probably also a lazy bum. Following the step-by-step guidelines put forth in the Hitchhiker's Guide to World Domination by Microsoft Press, you've decided to outsource the building of your Death Star v1.0 Operating System to a room full of monkeys. Not human code monkeys, mind you, but real monkeys. (Budgets are tight these days.)

Most of the monkeys are awaiting their background checks and security clearances for this project; so to advert any problems down the road they've been housed together in a locked cubicle prison with an unlimited supply of self-cloning bananas (thankfully supplied via a special partnership with the Department of Defense which has taken a special interest in this project). Monkeys whose security clearances are later rejected will be terminated after product completion. This is not expected to be a problem as in either case of success or failure very few support staff are expected to be necessary.

The decision has been made to allow the monkeys to initiate coding. After much debate, management has also decided to supply the monkeys with computers. Software for those computers barely made it through the cost control committee, but after much deliberation it was decided that each computer will be supplied with Microsoft Visual Studio .NET.

To keep everything in order, the Standards Gestapo has insisted that CMM Level 6 must be attained. Everyone is at a loss as to what that means, but a general agreement has been reached that all the monkeys (now glowingly referred to as "talent" by management) are to use the same .NET language. As founder and Chief Software Monkeytect (the CEO position was taken over by the venture capitalists), you're faced with your first major decision, C# or VB.NET? And once you decide, you need a quick getting started guide to throw at the monkeys so they can start slinging code. (All the monkeys are downsized senior architects from failed J2EE projects, so they're familiar with blue-sky concepts but a little rusty when it comes to actually doing real work.) Luckily, though, you've come to the right place. End of very long introduction, and on with the code...
